The St. Johns Rivers most important and well represented predator is the alligator. Alligators are crocodilians in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. There are two alligator species: the American and the Chinese (Alligator sinensis). The word “alligator” comes from the Spanish word for lizard, el lagarto, which is the term the early settlers of Florida used when they first encountered them.
White-tailed deer are the most popular game species in Florida. In addition to being valued by hunters, deer are appreciated by hikers, wildlife photographers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.
The Great horned owls are one of the most common owls in North America. They are easily identified by their ear-like tufts, large yellow eyes, sharp talons, and deep hooting voice. Nicknamed the “tiger of the sky.” great horned owls are well-known for their fierce nature and ability to catch prey larger than themselves. These owls can take down prey such as mice, frogs, insects, birds, mammals and even other owls.
The Red-tailed Hawk is the most common hawk in North America. Large in size, these hawks live in most of the U.S including Florida, where they are found all year long. These hawk have broad, rounded wings and a short tail. Their coloring, as their name indicates, is a red tail, with a rich brown color adobe, pale feathers below and a streaked belly with a dark bar between their wrist and shoulders.
They’re known as specks, crappie (pronounced craw-pee). perch and moonfish. Whatever you call them, the black (or white) crappie, a small North American sunfish, has become the largest fishing sensation, perhaps overtaking the popularity of the largemouth bass.
This water-loving animal is found throughout Florida except the Keys. River Otters usually prefer fresh water and can be found in rivers, creeks, lakes, ponds, and swamps. Otters live in burrows on the bank of the water body, often under tree roots. They may dig their own burrow or remodel a beaver’s burrow.
